I always say that my dad instills the entrepreneurial spirit in me. He will look at everything and see a business idea. He always encouraged us to think and we probably absorbed some of his skills over the years. But I never give my mother enough credit for her role in my life.
We were at a dinner a few weeks ago and the topic of marriage came up (as it invariably does at 'this age', yes I know, I don't understand it either) and my mother looked at the ladies and said "I got married when I was 19. I promised myself that my daughter would get to live her life. She will study as much as wants. She will work and decide how she wants to lead her life". I looked at my mom and beamed. At that moment I realized how lucky I was.
I often meet people who say things like 'you're living the dream' or 'we're so happy you're following your passion' I then respond the way I usually do - with an uncomfortable smile. It's only now that I realize that the reason I am able to do all this is because my mother let me make my decisions and stood by them.
So for all the mothers reading this: I hope you give your daughters the opportunity to follow their dreams. Because mine did. And I turned out pretty alright :)
Happy 50th Birthday Mom! I love you!
